Powell's School Church of England (VA) Primary School

Curriculum & Learning

Powell’s C of E Primary School is committed to meeting the requirements of the primary National Curriculum.  We want our children to leave our school with the confidence that comes from possessing a bank of essential knowledge and the skills with which they can apply this knowledge.  We believe that this will lead them to be successful, independent and motivated learners in readiness for their next stage of education.

The National Curriculum is taught through a mix of discrete subjects, links are made to topics when appropriate.  Topics have been designed to complement and build on one another with clear progression and links so that in subsequent year groups, they will be able to explore concepts deeper, applying their knowledge in different contexts. The more able are challenged further in their learning and children who find aspects of their learning more difficult, are appropriately supported so that they too are enabled to experience success.  National requirements and school requirements are mapped out as a whole school and then teachers plan the curriculum for their pupils accordingly.   The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils, and their understanding of our core values are woven through the curriculum.

Theme days, whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school all enrich and develop the children’s learning. After school clubs and events extend these opportunities further.

The outdoor environment and the local community are considered an opportunity for active learning for all our pupils. The school grounds have been developed so they can enrich different curriculum areas e.g. science, reading, PE etc.

Pupils have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through workshops, class assemblies, performances, competitions and events involving other schools. Developing their independence and motivation as learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.
